Week 1: Why I Choose Action
I choose action for the film genre because of how much i enjoy action films. These movies always have a way of capturing the audiences attention,if done right, for the whole film. Action films have the ability to make the viewer take the perspective of the protagonist making the viewer feel heroic and powerful, invincible. Action can also make the viewer feel for the characters. This means when the character has something bad happen to them they feel sad for them, but also works the opposite way. If the hero accomplishes his goal we can sigh and rejoice that "The world is now safe". Some of my favorite action movies include Avenger Infinity War, Black Panther, Inception, The Revenant, Indiana Jones, and Lawrence of Arabia. All of these movies take the viewers attention and hold it till the very end of the movie and do this through various ways. The Revenant shows us Gaz suffer through lose and struggle. A bear attack leaves Gaz extremely close to death; as the weather worsens half the group decides to go ahead to go get help since they can not pull Gaz up the hill because of his current condition. A group is offered money to stay with him as he recovers, all but one turn down the payment because of pure respect for Gaz. Even after the bear attack, the movie decides to make Gaz suffer even more. The man that did accept the payment decided that it would be faster to just kill Gaz and take the money. In this process, the man kills a young man, who is clearly very close to Gaz, but Gaz manages to survive. Through this huge struggle we grow more fond of Gaz as we see him suffer and feel bad for him. As the movie goes on I sat glued to my seat through the movie, while Gaz struggles to recover in the harsh wilderness and is also trying to hunt down the man that killed the young man. Because we saw him go through these struggles this movie is we feel like we are sitting in the snow with him as he goes on his adventure. The reality of this movie also holds my attention, in the freezing temperatures, sometimes it is incredibly hard to survive and crazy things have to happen to survive. Leonardo DiCaprio shows this by having to cut open a horse and, remove it organs, just to crawl in for the night. This movies leaves the viewer wondering how he managed to survive the harsh wilderness. The internal struggle of the main protagonist is what makes or breaks the movie, the audience needs to feel connected the characters. This makes them feel plot twists more, as we seem to "trust" the characters. This way of making movies just has many benefits for the movie and will usually allow it to score highly on movie reviews. Blackpanther also does this by showing T' Challa almost die after fighting the main enemy who wanted to be king and didnt agree T'Challa should be King. As we see T'Challa recover, we cant wait to see the final battle between the two as tension grows, and everyone thinks that T'Challa is dead after the fight. Thsi is why i enjoy action movies, because they make us feel for the character.
