Film Viewing Practice Essay Q2 week 3
The first edit I realized about this clip was the use of nondiegetic sound, the music playing in the background behind the dialogue and engine whine (also nondiegetic). I believe this is supposed to make the viewer feel sorry for the girl and leads me to infer that Captain America dies or is lost. The cuts between the pilot and Agent Carter are continuity editing and cross-cutting (?), most of the opening scene beginning at eye level, other than the low angle shot to show the audience the planes rapid descent. The next scene opens up with an establishing shot of a large bridge and big city, so the audience can infer that Carter has since moved to a big city one year after the incident. The small office begins to flash red and a horn blares overhead. Throughout the clips inside the small office, by the men standing up, briefcases ready, we can assume that the horn means something important is happening, a good use of mise en scene and sound. The repeated use of the horn is also an example of a sonic flashback. A good listener can hear faintly of the two men failing the mission assigned to them, to hunt down the so called “Zodiac”, somewhat foreshadowing Agent Carter going to complete the mission. The lights shutting off, leaving Agent Carter in the dark, further shows how the office is closing, leaving Carter by herself. The dark river docks and inside of the shipping yard gives off a stealthy vibe because of the lack of light. The fast-paced fighting scene is an example of continuity editing from high and eye level angles. The outfits/costumes of the actors give off a vibe of mob members/gangsters. While the man searches around for Agent Carter, older, diegetic music plays in the background, along with a nondiegetic creepy, suspicious sound to make the audience curious and feel suspense. The next fighting scene features low angle shots along with eye level shots and cuts back and forth rapidly between shots to show how agent carter quickly whips out her foes.
